Hatchery is a place where chicken eggs are hatched under artificial conditions. This is a multibillion dollar industry, with high production systems used to maximize bird size or egg product.
Generally large numbers are produced at one time so the resulting birds are same size and can be kept for meat or brought into production for eggs at the same time.
Hens lay eggs from the breeding sections which are collected three to four times a day to avoid pre-incubation. Eggs are stored in the cold room waiting for the day of setting at right temperatures 18 degrees Celsius if stored less than 7 days and above 7 days drop to 16 degrees Celsius.
Hatching egg shells are checked for soundness before being put into the machines according to the age weight, days of storage and must be clean well-shaped eggs.
Incubators control the temperatures, humidity, turning and there is the control of air intake into the machines, all hatchery rooms are subjected to temperature.
control and are supposed to be 25 degrees Celsius. Machines are checked on an hourly basis and information recorded, calibrations of the machines done day after loading eggs.
The whole process of incubation takes 21 days and on the 18th or 19th day, candling of hatching eggs takes place from incubators to hatchers ,clear eggs without embryos are removed to create hatching space and improve chick quality.
In the hatchers there is no turning, and temperature and humidity are optimum for hatching, so that the embryo gets well oriented for their exit from the shell.
Vaccination takes place at day old in the hatchery ie spray vaccinations and subcutaneous vaccinations Finally chicks are packed into environmental controlled environment before delivered to the customers.
Hatcheries are created as an economic booster to enhance food supplies to the nations and egg productions. Also plays an important part in producing chicks and eggs to the small scale farmers. Technical advice to the community on how to pass the information back to the hatcheries regarding performance and quality of the chicks.
